THE ORGANIZATION
The world's premier and best known organization for girls and young women, Girl Scouts of the USA is the largest, all-female serving, volunteer organization in the world. Girl Scouting was founded in Savannah, Georgia in 1912 and recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. Girl Scouts of Western New York serves 18,000 girls and 7,500 volunteer adults in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming counties. The Council’s gross budget is $7 million. Its administrative headquarters and service center are located in Buffalo, New York with additional program and service centers in Batavia, Buffalo, Jamestown, Lockport, Niagara Falls, and Rochester.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for related comprehensive strategic planning, implementation, management, and oversight of all fundraising and donor relations activities across the jurisdiction with staff assigned in this functional area. The CDO will manage day-to-day fundraising operations including research and prospect identification, cultivation and communications strategies, proposal development, grant application writing and tracking, solicitations strategies, donor stewardship, database management, communications and outreach activities, and development-related volunteer relations.
Additionally, the CDO provides support and guidance to the marketing and public relations functions which have their own dedicated staff.
While reporting to the CEO, the CDO works collaboratively and maintains clear and regular communications with the council’s Board of Directors and Fund Development Committee, volunteer leadership and donor prospects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The ideal qualities of the incumbent will include an open and receptive approach to collaboration with multiple stakeholder groups, high integrity as demonstrated through effective planning and implementation to meet mutually agreed upon goals. An individual who can be flexible while maintaining strong determination towards meeting goals and who can be an inspiration to others. This individual will be expected to think strategically and execute effectively in a collaborative environment where results are critically important. This position requires the ability to maintain a regular schedule of out-of-office meetings across the council’s jurisdiction, and a valid driver’s license is necessary.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Must have a minimum of 5 years of successful fund development and program/people management experience; seeking candidates with excellent critical thinking, interpersonal, and communications skills, and success in dealing with a variety of people, ideas and business situations across a substantial territory. Valued will be solid, successful business experience in either for-profit or not-for-profit businesses with management responsibility and accountability in areas such as development, marketing and corporate communications; must be experienced in the use of Blackbaud’s The Raiser’s Edge and/or similar development database management tool. Knowledge of and experience in the western New York philanthropic community is highly desired. Must demonstrate a track record of progressive accomplishments in philanthropic giving such as event planning and related activities.
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with an emphasis on business administration, management or marketing communications. CFRE and master’s degree preferred.
